Festivals worth timing a trip around
Puglia’s calendar is full of them; these are the ones worth building a trip around.
Fire & carnival
January, February
The Focara di Novoli (around 16 January) lights one of the Mediterranean’s biggest bonfires for Sant’Antonio Abate. Then Carnevale di Putignano, one of Italy’s oldest carnivals, rolls giant papier-mâché floats through town from January to Shrove Tuesday.
Sacred & patronal
March to May
Holy Week (March or April) brings Puglia’s most haunting processions, above all the hooded Perdoni of Taranto. In early May, Bari throws itself into the Festa di San Nicola (7 to 9 May), carrying its patron saint down to the sea.
Music & pizzica
July, August
The big one: the Notte della Taranta, the pizzica festival that ends with a huge free concert in Melpignano in late August. Alongside it, the Festival della Valle d’Itria opera season in Martina Franca and the Locus music festival in Locorotondo, plus Lecce’s Sant’Oronzo feast (24 to 26 August).
Harvest & Christmas
September to December
Autumn is sagra season: village food festivals for the new oil, wine and produce. In December the towns fill with presepi (nativity scenes) and Christmas markets, and the cities stay lively while the coast sleeps.
