What a Puglia wedding costs

The one number that drives everything

Before any venue or florist, one figure sets the scale of your wedding: how many people you invite. Food and drink is charged per head, and it is usually the largest single line on the budget, so guest count, multiplied through catering, drinks, seating, transport and favours, quietly decides most of the total.

That is the good news, because it is the lever you control most directly. Thirty guests at a beautiful masseria can feel more generous, and cost a fraction of, a hundred-and-twenty-guest event at the same venue. If there is one decision to make early and deliberately, it is the size of the list.

Three realistic budgets

Most Puglia weddings land in one of three bands. They map to guest count more than to taste: the same couple’s vision simply costs more with more people in the room.

Where do these come from? They’re the same bands the couples we match use to brief us, deliberately broad, because two weddings of the same size can differ by a lot depending on season and supplier choices.

Where the money actually goes

Within any budget, the split is fairly predictable. Treat these as rough proportions of a typical mid-size wedding, not fixed percentages. They shift with your priorities.

The headline: catering plus venue is usually well over half. If you want to bring a budget down, those two, driven by guest count and season, are where the real movement is, not in trimming the florist.

The levers that move the bill, most to least

1. Guest count. The single biggest lever, full stop. Every guest carries catering, drinks, a seat, often a transfer and a favour. A shorter list is the most powerful saving you can make, and it usually makes the day better, not smaller.
2. Season and day. Late spring and September-October are peak. A wedding in the shoulder season, or on a weekday, can cost meaningfully less than the same event in high summer, when venues set minimums and demand peaks. Puglia in May or early October is also simply more comfortable than August.
3. Local versus imported. Puglia’s own caterers, florists, wine and musicians are excellent and priced for the region. Flying in suppliers from home, or insisting on out-of-season flowers, is where budgets quietly inflate.

5. Exclusive-use minimums. In peak months many masserie require a multi-night, whole-property booking. Wonderful if you want a weekend takeover; worth knowing before you fall for a venue that only books that way in August.

Why is all of this generally cheaper than Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast or Lake Como? Comparable venues, food and service in Puglia simply cost less; the gap is widest exactly on the two big lines, venue and catering.

The costs couples forget

• Legal paperwork & sworn translation: if you marry legally in Italy, budget for translations, an apostille and registrar fees.
• Guest accommodation & transfers: even if guests pay their own rooms, you may cover shuttles between hotels and the venue down country lanes.
• The music licence (SIAE): Italy’s performing-rights fee for playing music at the event.
• Service & taxes: confirm whether quotes include service and VAT, or add them on top.
• Around the day: a welcome dinner, rehearsal dinner or farewell brunch are common at destination weddings and sit outside the wedding-day quote.
• Supplier travel & meals: vendors coming from further afield, and feeding your suppliers on the day.
